UNICEF gears up relief efforts for earthquake-stricken Haiti

Postby Luis Alves on Wed Jan 13, 2010 22:08

Image A child receives medical treatment after being injured in the earthquake in Port-au-Prince. The 7.0-magnitude quake rocked Haiti, killing possibly thousands of people as it toppled the presidential palace and hillside shanties alike, and left the already impoverished Caribbean nation appealing for international aid.

More words for what???

My plan is to leave LPPT to KJFK my goal is to fly with rescue K9 units from portuguese GNR (Guarda Nacional Republicana) and a group of portuguese AMI (portuguese international medical assistance),
form KJFK after refueling and gatter more suplies, food, fresh water and campaign hospitals to MTPP-Port au Prince

Luis, you are faster than your VA ;) Please have a look at the news on the homepage. Norbert is currently preparing a couple of aircraft and flight routes for special charter flights, ready to depart from the JFK hub and possibly other (closer) airports in the area.

But we want to make this more than just a virtual event. UNICEF has already established accounts for donations to Haiti. We have decided to support them with what we can afford. Therefor, every ACH flight to Haiti and the Dominican Republic, reported until this Saturday, 2400z, will be awarded 2 Euros to be donated to UNICEF efforts in Haiti.

Although we'd like to see many of you fly, I have to add that, as this is a private initiative by Norbert and me, we will restrict it to a maximum total of 70 Euros. If any of you wants to add to this with private donations, you are very welcome. We will provide links to UNICEF as well as route suggestions for your flights in a later post. Please stand by.

Announcement to all pilots:

Until Sturday, 13th at 2400z, Air-Child will reward every flight report to Haiti (or any nearby airports in Dom.Rep.) with a donation of 2 € to UNICEF relief efforts in the area. The Carribean nation has been struck by a major earthquake on Tuesday, killing thousands of people and leaving many children without a home or family. Being one of the poorest countries in the world, the people of Haiti will need every support they can get.

If you want to know more about UNICEF efforts in Haiti or want to donate yourself, follow this link (also features a link to donate): http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/haiti_52423.html
Latest news:
http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/haiti_52435.html

http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/haiti_52480.html

Air-Child provides cargo planes, ready to charter at different locations:
at MPTO - Panama City (short range)
at KJFK, SCEL and SBPK - Pelotas (middle to long range)
at EHAM (long range)
The easiest way to pick up these aircraft is by going to the fleet map and activating the 'charter' and 'cargo' filters.
Of course you can use any other charter aircraft as well. And also the L-100 OY-PER which has a regular connection from MPTO to MTPP.

I'm in this week, any flightplans for EHAM-MTPP for 747-400F would be great..
I have some charts here from JeppView3 but MTPP is outdated (May 2005 charts) ;)

====
By the way, We are also concerned cause there a reports of missing Filipinos workers in Haiti including our troops who were send by our government in part of UN Peacekeeping Mission contingencies.

I hope they are still in one piece..

Since there is no up to date charts for MTPP, plus no electricity disabling lighting and Navaids... I might just land the 744F in a hard way.. GPS.. =)

Just made a rather hard landing at TJSJ - my diversion AP - as head winds of 150kts prevented me to fly all the way from EKCH to MTPP.

Torben, your flight will nevertheless count for the fund raising.

For those of you who want to perform more than one flight and in addition they want to be "as real as it gets" - all flights from the United States are performed by Air Force Global Logistics Support Center from Scott AFB Illinois (KBLV). FAA had stopped all civilian flights from the United States to Haiti at the request of the Haitian government, because there is no room on the ground for more planes and not enough jet fuel for planes to go back.

The route:
BNA ATL CRG OMN VRB ZQA ZIN MEDON VETMO
1523 Nm, approx. 3:40h
The Charts:
KBLV:http://dtpp.myairplane.com/index.php?mode=
MTPP:http://port-au-prince.vatcar.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=86&Itemid=215&lang=en

Completed the my first flight to MTPP - despite all the tragedy - a really nice flight and surroundings (scenery) the ATC was on (CTR and APP), and for a long time after flying in Europe or Asia in real time Iflew during the day! :)

I had a probably the best landing I've ever done by 747 - as I saw it, the FS Pax showed 126 ft/min but the Fs Kepper noted more than 800 ... Looks like the Gaussian curve for statistical landings ... both curve ends ....

Anyway, do the flights back from MPPT also count? I could make a few turnarounds ...
